In the minds of the French and Russian explorers, the handful of Carolinians living in the Marianas best captured the spirit of the Pacific islands. Nothing would better illustrate the joie de vivre of the people than this dance performed by Carolinians on Tinian. Arago, who drew this picture, wrote: "Let us leave these good people to their early habits and inclinations."
