This is a view of the shoreline, the one exposed part of the walled town known as the colony–or Kolonia–during the early German period.  When the Germans first assumed control of the islands, they pulled down the stone wall that the Spanish had erected.  German authorities were confident of their ability to govern without resorting to the defenses that the Spaniards had created to protect themselves.  Events ten years later proved otherwise.
