History III: Sunburst in the South Sea

2008 (68:00 mins) Island Topics #58 HISTORY

Beginning with the establishment of the Japanese civil administration in the new mandate, this segment of the history series offers a look at the “golden years” under Japanese rule. Using live footage seldom before seen, the video portrays the impact of the first public education system on the islands as older Micronesians remember it. The video goes on to document the economic bonanza of the period, with special emphasis on the rise of the sugar industry on Saipan and the expansion of commercial agriculture and fishing in Palau and Chuuk. It traces the rise of the large towns, with their shops and bustling traffic, in many of the district centers. The video concludes with the growing spirit of Japanese nationalism and the falling shadows of the war to come.
