| Peacetime also ushered in the birth of new towns. Majuro, named the district center by the US military, replaced Jaluit as the headquarters in the Marshalls. In this 1945 photo, the town hall (in the middle) is flanked by hospital buildings. Soon the center would shift from Laura to the other side of the atoll. |
