The sugar mill in Chalan Kanoa (at present-day Mt. Carmel School) that had once processed the island's entire sugar crop was in flames after the attack. The sugar was brought to the mill by a narrow-gauge railroad that encircled the island. Sugar was the main industry in the Marianas under the Japanese.
