As the fall of Saipan drew closer, hundreds of Japanese military men and civilians leapt to their deaths from Suicide Cliff and Banzai Cliff. Whole families plunged at one time, deaf to the pleas of US military interpreters to surrender. This Buddhist shrine in Marpi commemorates these victims.
