| While the women chatted and smoked, their men were out hunting deer. That, at least, is the impression given by this artist, a member of the Lutke expedition. He shows men hunting with muskets, not spears or slings. Like the dogs and deer shown here, the guns are evidence of long contact with the outside world. |
