When European naval captains like Fedor Lutke visited the Marianas in the early 1800s, they found a people dressed very much like themselves. They should have expected as much, for the Chamorros had been dealing with Europeans for a century and a half by that time. The Guamanian family that Lutke's artist drew in 1828 was almost completely clothed.
