It was an Outer Islander, Kadu from Woleai, who guided the Russian naval ships under Kotzebue through the eastern Marshalls. Kadu, who is shown here with topknot and distended earlobes, had drifted to the Marshalls where the Russians met him on Aur. One Russian officer acknowledged Kadu as his teacher and called him "one of the finest characters I have met in my life."
