In Palau, life during this time had not changed much from a century earlier. Here a group of Palauan men sit in front of a house next to two European traders. The small building to the left is a spirit house, used when people wished to communicate with the dead. By the end of German rule in 1914, Palau had begun its rapid march to modernization.
