Whenever an island family needed cash, they would gather mature coconuts and make copra.At least until a few years ago, when copra prices plunged. The coconut tree, abundant everywhere, offered a cash income for the simplest of families. This Marshallese, shown scraping out the dried coconut meat, is doing what people everywhere had been doing for years.
