Hayes' ship Leonora was wrecked in a typhoon off Kosrae in 1874. Hayes and his crew were stranded on Kosrae for six months before he slipped off to Guam, just days before the arrival of a British naval ship sent to arrest him. A few years later, Hayes was killed on his own ship by one of his crew.
