Fr. Diego Luis de Sanvitores was the first to bring the church to Micronesia. Along with five other Jesuits and a group of Filipino and Mexican catechists, he founded the mission in the Marianas in 1668. He and a dozen other Jesuits were killed during the early troubled years, but the church he planted flourished in time.
