CEREMONIES & DECORATIONS: The blades of a Boeing B-29 Superfortress propellor dominate a simple memorial to Lt. Gen. Millard F. Harmon, Pacific AAF leader, lost on a routine flight. Shown at the dedication of Harmon Field, site of the Marianas Air Depot and other AAF installations are, L-R: Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Maj. Gen. Willis H. Hale, who temporarily assumed command of AAF, Pacific Ocean Areas, and Col. O.F. Carlson, Commanding Officer of the Air Depot. Gen. Harmon was reported missing on March 3, 1945. He had been commanding general of AAF, Pacific Ocean Areas, commander of the Pacific Strategic AF and deputy commander of the 2oth AF. His successor, Lt. Gen. Barney M. Giles, recently assumed command. 1945.

Ponape , Japanese naval and supply base in the Carolines which was attacked by 7th AAF bombers 14 February 1944, as it looked to Marine aviators on a search mission 7 Feb.1944. Picture shows the dock and camp area and shipping in the inter-island channel. Long a permanent Japanese base, Ponape is strongly fortified.
