In order to survive, Japanese burrow underground, and attempt to keep one coral runway on each island serviceable for limited emergency operation. BOMBING: Jaluit, Marshalls. From Nov.1943 through Sept.1944, Jaluit was blasted by approximately 1,500 tons of bombs dropped by Consolidated B-24’s of the 7th Air Force. These attacks tapered off sharply after May 1944, with the last reported mission being on 21 Sept.1944 when three Consolidated B-24’s dropped three tons of bombs. Jan.1945.
