FIELDS & INSTALLATIONS: Because of a bad surf, for nearly nine months of the year, ships couldn’t approach the shore safely; this was the main reason it decided to build a small protected harbor at Saipan Village on Angaur Island in the Caroline Group. The work was done by the 1884th and the 1887th Engineer Aviations Battalions and the 52nd Combat Engineers. Here, giant bulldozers pull empty pontoon causeway to a new position. 10 October 1944.
