STRAFING & COMBAT: Liberator loses wing – Over the bypassed enemy island of Koror in the Palaus, this U.S. Army 7th Air Force Liberator which was making the bomb run with other B-24’s (arrows indicate bomb clusters) is hit squarely by a heavy anti-aircraft shell which was blown off its left wing. Engines are still turning on the dismembered section (circled). Flipped on its back, the big Liberator’s open bomb bays had not yet released the load pf 500-pounders. As the plane crashed in the heavy growth, one of the 11-man crew was seen to parachute. He is listed as missing.

BOMBING: At Palau Island (Caroline Island Group) on 30 March 1944, Navy dive bombers and torpedo planes from carrier task forces destroyed (lower right) four hangars at seaplane base, phosphate plant, 20 warehouses, docks, and started numerous fires. Out of the nine Japanese merchant ships in this picture, at least three are damaged. One beached fleet tender (right, center) is also damaged.
