FIELDS & INSTALLATIONS: An old Japanese strong point was converted to use as base operations for the B-29 “Superfort” Isley Field, Saipan, Marianas Islands. Air Transport Command and Transport Air Group planes used this strip also until completion of nearby Kobler Field. 500th Bombardment Group, 73rd Wing, 21st Bomber Command, 20th Air Force.

FOREIGN REHABILITATION: All the native islanders of Saipan, banded together into one organization and have set up the Native Hobby Shop. The products go to the island’s PX’s where they are sold for a nominal price. All proceeds go to the co-op overseer who pays each one a share and puts the rest in a material pool. Many finished products which have the natives turn out are shown here. 1945.

LANDINGS: General unloading scene on Saipan beachhead at low tide. The bulldozers in the foreground are towing trucks up the steep roadway they have constructed. On the low coral flats several LCM’s have been caught high and dry by the receding tide. Men are seen rolling fuel drums toward the shore. In the hazy distance are many ships of the vast convoy as they unload their equipment and supplies. Photo was made by the US Army 7th Air Force. 1944.

AIRPLANES: In tight formation over Saipan, a Republic P-47, Lockheed P-38, and a North American P-51 show what the Japanese can expect to see in the near future over Tokyo. P-47s helped take Marianas bases from which the P-38s flew strafing and escort missions to help soften up Iwo Jima, where the P-51s will be based.
